Purpose of Dental Inspection is on Dental laboratories have many tasks in common where extreme precision has to be performed. Restorations such as crowns, bridges, implants, full dentures are subject to performance criteria such as correct fit, finish or colour scheme. To fulfil these criteria, rework and inspection on the finished dentures are necessary.

Inspection Microscope

There are many areas within dental technology that require magnification. These include the inspection of dies, patterns, castings for fit and passivity of spans and porcelain for cracks, chips and surface finish. The unreinforced eyesight of dental technicians is not usually sufficient to be able to produce the required quality of dental rework. It is therefore extremely important to use a Dental Inspection device that can provide a realistic, three-dimensional image and true colour representation of the subject.

Bench magnifiers are not ideal for such applications, as they don’t offer not enough magnification and give too much distortion. The Mantis® range of stereo microscope is an extremely popular magnification tool for dental technicians with its versatile universal stand and ergonomic viewing head. 

Predominantly, a Mantis Compact with a 6x objective lens is used for general inspection work and Mantis Elite with up to 10x magnification is used for modifications.

The Mantis Elite also has an interchangeable turret that allows for technicians to quickly change from low to high magnification. With the option of an articulated arm, the Mantis can be quickly and easily fitted to the workbench in the laboratory.

Modifications and dental rework

It is important in dental technology to make sure that any modifications are carried out accurately in order to prevent the loss of fit. For rework of products in the dental laboratory a few requirements must be fulfilled by the magnifying device:

  • Good hand-to-eye coordination
  • Enough space between lens and object
  • Easy positioning of the magnifier over the object
  • Lens protection and dust proof
  • Ergonomic, fatigue-free operation
  • Magnification for the normal operation 4x or 6x

Working under magnification

The new Mantis delivers a solution when tasks such as trimming dies, fabricating accurate patterns and adjusting the fit of castings need to be carried out under magnification.
